The story of a valet damage claim, a hole in the law, and a free tool that closes it.
December 2023. Beverly Hills. I handed my keys to a hotel valet. When the car came back, the front splitter was scraped — $4,200 in damage. The valet manager's defense was a single question: "How do we know it wasn't already like that?"
He was right. I had nothing. No photos. No witness. No proof. I paid for the repair out of pocket.
That moment sat with me. Not because the valet was dishonest — most aren't — but because the system is structurally stacked against the driver. When you hand over your keys, you create a bailment (a legal transfer of custody). The valet owes you reasonable care, but the burden of proving damage happened on their watch falls on you. Without a timestamped before-state record, the valet company wins by default.
A quick survey of the tools available at the time revealed the problem: the only products that scanned cars were B2B platforms built for insurers and fleets (Carscan, Chex.ai, Spyne). Nothing existed for the individual driver walking up to a valet stand with nothing but a smartphone and 60 seconds to spare.
So I built it.

January – June 2024
Deep dive into bailment law and evidence standards
Researching how small claims courts, insurance adjusters, and valet companies actually adjudicate damage disputes. The consistent finding: timestamped, GPS-verified photographic evidence from before the handover is the single highest-leverage piece of documentation. Without it, the driver almost always loses.
2024 – 2025
Building the 3-Stop Protocol
Designing the product around one constraint: it must work in 60 seconds, require no app download, and produce evidence that holds up in court. The result is the 3-Stop Protocol: scan the car (8 angles, SHA-256 hashed, GPS-verified), generate a QR handover receipt both parties sign, then scan again at pickup to flag any new damage with AI comparison.
2026
Public launch — free, no signup, no download
CarShake launches at carshake.online with scans available in 10 languages, city-specific guides for major US and international cities, and a growing library of valet damage protection content. Completely free.
