6 Rental Car Return Red Flags
Rental companies are denying more damage claims. Here's how to protect yourself at drop-off.
1. "We'll inspect it later"
If the rental agent waves you off without a walk-around inspection, you're walking into a trap. They'll inspect the car after you leave and attribute any pre-existing or lot damage to you. Insist on a joint inspection. If they refuse, use CarShake to scan the car's condition at the moment of return — timestamped and geotagged at the rental lot.
2. After-hours drop-off
Dropping off when the office is closed means the car sits uninspected — sometimes for 12+ hours — in a lot where other cars, employees, or weather can cause damage. Every scratch that appears during that window gets billed to you. CarShake's scan at drop-off creates a time-locked record of the car's condition the moment you parked it.
3. Dimly lit return areas
Rental companies that route you into poorly lit return lanes or garages are making it hard for you to spot damage — and easy for them to claim it later. Use your phone's flash and CarShake's guided 8-angle scan to capture every panel under consistent lighting.
4. "Minor damage" billing weeks later
The new rental-industry playbook: accept the car without comment, then send a damage bill 2–4 weeks later with photos of a scratch you never saw. Without your own timestamped photos from return, you have no defense. CarShake's scans are stored with immutable timestamps — admissible in disputes.
5. Pressure to skip the walk-around
An agent who's in a hurry and says "don't worry about it, we trust you" is not doing you a favor. They're creating ambiguity that works in the rental company's favor. A 30-second CarShake scan takes less time than a manual walk-around and is more thorough.
6. Unexpected cleaning or administration fees
Some rental companies now add post-return fees for "excessive cleaning" or "administrative processing" of damage claims. These fees are often non-negotiable. The best defense: a timestamped condition report that proves the car was returned clean and undamaged.
